What is textured skin?

A textured skin is when your face skin is uneven. It can appear without warning despite how thorough your skin routine is. A textured skin might look dehydrated or dull. It can also appear bumpy, show rough patches, discoloration or dryness.

What kind of textured skin exists?

A textured skin can take different forms. Your skin can look bumpy, rough or uneven. It means that you have an excess of dead skin cells. A textured skin can also be seen when applying makeup, as it does not lie as nicely as usual.

Causes of textured skin

Your skin can become textured because of a buildup of dead skin cells, resulting in an uneven skin texture.

But it can also come from a bad environment like pollution, dirt, chemicals and sun exposure. These causes of textured skin can strip the skin of its organic collagen and elasticity. Therefore, it can make your skin look dehydrated or dull.

Smoking is another cause that can make your skin textured quicker than it should with aging, which is a natural cause of textured skin. It damages collagen and elastin, fibrous components of the skin that keep it firm.

Finally, as for wrinkles, tiredness and a stressful lifestyle can cause textured skin. Your diet may also play a role in textured skin.

Textured skin prevention

The first way to prevent textured skin is to wear sunscreen as much as needed, when exposing your face to sunlight. As for wrinkles once again, UV can damage your skin and reduce its ability to produce organic collagen and elastin. Sunscreen can be worn under makeup, both SPF 30 for daily use and SPF 50 for a long time outside in the sunlight are highly recommended.

It might seem obvious as it is an organic need, but staying hydrated by drinking enough water everyday is a very good and efficient way to prevent textured skin. It moisturizes your skin and keeps it smooth, avoiding it looking cracked or uneven. Overall, having a healthy and balanced diet helps your skin stay in good shape.

Textured skin treatments

Despite being natural, there are a few things you can do to avoid, minimize or get rid of textured skin. The first thing to do is to exfoliate your skin. By exfoliating it, scrubbing your face with a gentle exfoliator, you can remove dead skin cell buildup, which can clog your pores and texture your skin.

You can exfoliate your skin three to four times a week. By using an exfoliator, you can clean your skin and the areas that need it the most, but don’t forget to moisturize it after.

Another way to reduce textured skin is to add vitamin C to your daily skincare routine. It has anti-oxidising properties, which helps fighting potential exterior damages that can be made to your skin, for example sunlight.
